Celebration of meanings in Italian cinema

The program is devoted to exploring the myriad meanings of escape – from a recreational outlet, a physical place, to self-identity redefinition – revealed through prominent Italian masterpieces from the 50′s, 60′s and 90′s.

Federico Fellini’s first film as a director delves deeper into the implications of idolizing heroes of the Fumetti – photo novels – that were very popular during the 40’s in Italy.

Stromboli – Stromboli – Terra di Dio (1950)
Known as the father of the Neorealist film movement with his emblematic masterpiece Rome Open City – Roma Citta’ Aperta (1945), Roberto Rossellini in this 1950 decides to change direction into psychological human drama that focuses on the individual.

This festival is a snapshot of the feminine image so skillfully represented by Italian cinema as the quintessential symbol of Italian beauty. This series is organized in collaboration with the Italian Program at SDSU which will introduce the films and moderate the discussion.
